Jonathan Smithers

Jonathan Smithers is the Chief Executive Officer of the Law Council of Australia. The Law Council is the peak national body representing over 65,000 lawyers across all the State and Territories.

He joined in September 2016, directly after completing his term as President of the Law Society of England & Wales.

Prior to the Presidency he had served on the Council of the Law Society for ten years and been involved with a number of regional law associations. He also served on several boards both within and external to the Society.

Before coming to Australia Jonathan had been in private practice for over thirty years in the same firm in south-east England, having commenced his articles in 1984 and rising to become senior partner.

He specialised in real estate work, was head of the firm's property department and also dealt with elder law and succession matters as well as being the managing partner.

In his very limited spare time Jonathan became an experienced chorister with the Oriana Singers, one of the most active choirs in England. He has sung in over 40 English cathedrals.
