The programme for the 25th annual conference presented by the Superannuation Committee of the Law Council of Australia at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Melbourne promises to give delegates an opportunity to face the pressing legal issues for the superannuation industry over the coming year.

We are delighted that Her Honour Marilyn Warren AC. the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria has agreed to open our conference.  As many of the delegates will know, Her Honour is very knowledgeable on matters concerning superannuation, and we look forward to hearing her insights.

Consistent with previous years, our conference is designed to provide our delegates with a depth of understanding on complex trust law, fiduciary and regulatory issues. Our preeminent speakers include His Honour Ashley Black, of the NSW Supreme Court, who will help us to understand the impact of recent cases on directors' duties and Dr Ian Hardingham, QC. of the Victorian Bar, who will speak on the topic of whether trustees are required by law to provide reasons when making decisions.  We will continue our regular case law update and bring you some further thinking on the implementation of the proposed MySuper changes. We will analyse the role of a superannuation fund trustee when making investment decisions and in providing 'advice' to members.

A further area of close review will be APRA's soon to be released Prudential Standards. We are happy to report that a delegate from APRA will join a distinguished panel to discuss the scope and impact of these key reforms.

This year, our program has been organised to fit within two full days, running from the morning of Thursday 23 February to 'close of business' on Friday 24 February.  To assist our interstate delegates we will provide a shuttle to the airport for those departing Friday evening.

Making new friends and catching up with old ones is always an important part of our conference, and we hope you will join us at the Opening Cocktail Party on Wednesday evening before the official programme commences, and at the Gala Dinner on the Thursday night. We are very happy that The Hon Michael Kirby AC OMG has agreed to be our keynote speaker.

The Superannuation Committee of the Law Council of Australia in conjunction with our conference organiser, Communiqué, look forward to seeing you at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Melbourne 2012.
