The European Focus Group will welcome Professor Dame Hazel Genn at the Law Council Secretariat in Canberra on 6 April 2010. Dame Hazel Genn will participate in a Roundtable discussion on Civil Justice Reform. Topics to be discussed include:
Dame Hazel Genn is Dean of Laws, Professor of Socio-Legal Studies and Co-Director at the Centre for Empirical Legal Studies in the Faculty of Laws at University College London, where she is also an Honorary Fellow. She is a leading authority on civil justice and has published widely in this field.

The immediate past president of the Law Council of Australia, Mr John Corcoran, has been appointed to the Executive of the ILS. Mr Corcoran has been Councillor for Australia for the International Bar Association since 2005. In 2008, he was appointed to the Management Board of the International Bar Association.
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, and the Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Mr Andrew Metcalfe, will speak at the 4th CPD Immigration Law Conference. The Honorable Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, will be one of many key figures to address the American Bar Association's (ABA) conference on "Cross Border Collaboration, Consequences and Conflict: The Internationalisation of Domestic Law and Its Consequences", to be held in Sydney February 2010. The conference provides an opportunity to hear from some of the most respected legal minds from Australia and abroad. Other key speakers include former High Court Chief Justices, the Honourable Murray Gleeson and the Honourable Sir Anthony Mason, and former High Court Judge Michael Kirby.
The event is a joint effort between the ABA's Section of International Law, the Law Council, the Law Society of NSW and the NSW Bar Association. The conference will be held on 9 February in the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. It will be followed on 10 February by a Moot Court Presentation on the Art of Persuading Judges. Preparations are well underway for the 4th CPD Immigration Law Conference. The Conference will be held in Melbourne on 26 and 27 March 2010. More detailed information will be available shortly.
Dr Wolfgang Babeck and Ms June McPhie have been appointed as the new co-convenors of the International Human Rights Focus Group. Dr Babeck and Ms McPhie are currently assessing activities and topics for the Human Rights Focus Group and will be in contact with Focus Group members shortly.
At its meeting on 11 December 2009, the ILS Executive further agreed to establish an "International Mediation and Arbitration Focus Group". The Focus Group will be chaired by Mr Damian Sturzaker and Professor Jeff Waincymer. ILS members are more than welcome to join this Focus Group. At its meeting on 11 December 2009, the ILS Executive agreed to appoint Ms June McPhie and Ms Mary Macken (President-elect of the Law Society of New South Wales) as members of the ILS Executive. Ms McPhie will replace Judge John North who resigned from the Executive earlier this year.
