The Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia considers it important that individuals and organisations have access to information about companies, businesses, trademarks and domain names. Each of the following links offer useful information about companies, businesses, trademarks and domain names.
Information about company and business names can be obtained online from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). At this website, ASIC provides information and companies and business through (among other things) a national names index database. To search this index, follow the links to "Companies - searching and lodging" and then to "Searching - National Names Index".
Information about trade marks (for example, whether a trade mark (and relevant class) is registered)can be obtained from the trade marks database administered by IP Australia.
Information regarding Australian domain names can be obtained from au.Domain Administration. Domain Administration administers information relating to Domain Names (such as domain name registrations technical contact and administrative contact details).
A popular "Whois" domain name search engine is Geektools.
Although this information is prepared to facilitate individuals and organisations seeking information about company and business names, trade marks and domain names, the Law Council of Australia does not accept liability or responsibility for any actions taken or not taken on the basis of the information provided above, or for any negligent misstatements, error or omissions contained at any of the hypertext links mentioned above.
