The Law Council, as the nation's peak legal body, represents the Australian legal profession overseas, and maintains close relationships with legal professional bodies throughout the world.

Through its International Strategy, the Law Council seeks to:

  • Improve access to foreign legal services markets for Australian Lawyers;
  • Develop institutional linkages for the Law Council;
  • Support developing bars and law associations;
  • Promote and uphold the rule of law;
  • Promote Australia as a hub for international arbitration; and
  • Participate in policy formulation by government.

The Law Council's international work is based on its International Strategy.

The Law Council also has an International Law Section which supports the Council's international work through focus groups, seminars, and conferences on international legal issues.

The Law Council works closely with the Australian Government and the International Legal Services Advisory Council to promote opportunities for Australian lawyers through Free Trade Agreements. It also undertakes initiatives to promote international trade in legal services.
