International

The Law Council represents and promotes the Australian legal profession internationally.

Internationally, the Law Council seeks to:

  • develop and maintain relationships with counterpart professional bodies;
  • represent and create opportunities for Australian lawyers;
  • participate as a leader in multi-national professional associations;
  • advocate for human rights and the rule of law; and
  • engage in initiatives and programs to promote the internationalisation of legal practice and goodwill amongst the legal profession.

The Law Council's international work is based on its International Strategy.

The Law Council also has an International Law Section which supports the Council's international work through focus groups, seminars, and conferences on international legal issues.

The Law Council works closely with the Australian Government and the International Legal Services Advisory Council to promote opportunities for Australian lawyers through Free Trade Agreements. It also undertakes initiatives to promote international trade in legal services.
