The laws of evidence represent an important part of criminal procedure. The laws of evidence ensure that a person is only convicted of an offence on the basis of information which is relevant, reliable and not unduly prejudicial. The laws of evidence also help to ensure that evidence is gathered in accordance with the law.
The Law Council closely monitors any proposed amendments to the Commonwealth Evidence Act 1995.
The Law Council also supports efforts to harmonise evidence laws across the Commonwealth, States and Territories. For that reason the Law Council takes a close interest in the development and implementation of the model uniform evidence bill.
