Legal Education Committee

In June 2007, the Law Council established the Legal Education Committee (the Committee) in order to address national developments in legal education. The Committee considers a range of issues relating to legal education, including qualification for admission as a legal practitioner to continuing professional development. The Committee consists of representatives of the legal profession, academia, law students, and practical legal training and continuing professional development providers.

Issues

The Legal Education Committee is currently examining issues relating to:

  • Standards for Practical Legal Training Providers and Courses
  • The possible introduction of Statutory Interpretation as a separate requirement for admission

Terms of Reference

  • Access to legal education, including the cost to students and to law schools of law degrees
  • The funding of law schools
  • The promotion of Australian law schools and their degrees in foreign countries
  • Quality in legal education, including the quality of online education and developments in legal education, such as the ‘law as a second degree only' model
  • Plagiarism and its fitness implications for those seeking admission to the profession
  • Co-operative research initiatives by the Law Council and the Council of Australian Law Deans
  • Future directions in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Future Directions in Practical Legal Training (PLT) in Australia, including accreditation of PLT courses
  • Engagement with Australian law students about issues of national relevance
  • Engagement and co-operation between law schools and legal professional associations
  • Legal education requirements that must be satisfied in order to obtain admission as a practitioner, including the Priestley 11.
